How is Proficiency Assessed?

There are multiple methods available for assessing student proficiency. These include tests commonly taken by students to assess proficiency or for college admissions such as the SAT, AP, IB, or ACCESS for ELLs. In addition, tests are available for students not participating in the programs listed above or who speak languages in which no such test is available. A portfolio assessment is available upon request to the VFLA.

In order to qualify for the Seal, students must demonstrate proficiency in English, plus one other language. Therefore, students learning a world language at school must also demonstrate proficiency in English to qualify. Please refer to the following chart for the indicators:
